where the SmartPower generation connects
May 20, 2013

Issues here of not liking the messenger, liking the message, not liking the message nor the messenger, and so on.  This figure has become quite controversial.  People either love him or hate him, and it seems to be something off which he feeds.  The main issue that keeps coming up, however, is if and how a celebrated figure can comment on consumerism, race, etc.  This plays into society's re-evaluation of celebrity as it questions what it considers to be socially responsible behavior by those who have so much in an era that is so tough for many.  An opinion piece in Vibe put it perfectly, "Yet can a man who’s claimed he shops so much that he can speak Italian—the same dude who played mute at an Occupy Wall Street protest while sporting multiple gold chains—truly be a voicebox for the middle-class man?"  Maybe, maybe not. But he can certainly serve as an instrument to get a number of classes talking about the issues, and isn't that what art and artists are supposed to ultimately do at the end of the day?

What's the biggest chatter today in celeb, why, Kanye West, of course.  Not only he still currently a trending topic on Twitter with the release of the album coupled with response to the "Saturday Night Live" performance, but it seems the lyrics and method in which his single "New Slaves" has been introduced has everyone talking.  Consumerism, racial politics and more - leave to Kanye to stir the pot.  Let's check out what the comment arena has to say about the cut.

Naturally, the first question one might ask here is just how old where those who participated in the poll, what is their ethnic background and lifestyle before we say "Americans," as if this represents the whole. These questions and more consistently come up in the comment-sphere now that we are in the SmartPower era.  No longer quick to believe the media nor the polls reported in the media, people are skeptical about just about everything these days. Perhaps taken with even less than a grain of salt, such "accurate" polls and "facts" can no longer be the first nor last word in our society any longer since people now are much more self-determinant.  However, those in the traditional position are not going down without a fight and continue to try to push some idea of thought centered around some type of agenda.  Watch this push-pull heat up as tactics are questioned and organizations so exposed and debated within the comment arena that they begin to either use different standards altogether or shy away from this status quo approach.  In the meantime, doubt Bieber is losing any sleep at all over this one while he continues to count the zero's in his bank account....

Much chatter over findings in a recent poll released from an organization called Public Policy Polling on music.  Justin Bieber was found to be most disliked as well as a predominantly thumbs down on rap.  Believe it or not, Justin Timberlake was found to be artist most wanted as president of the United States.

Slippery slope for Rihanna, huh?  In the SmartPower era where individuals are taking more control than ever, under-estimating both their needs and power is dangerous.  This is particularly true for the realm of celebrity, that we have said repeatedly here, is undergoing re-evaluation.  The celebrities still seem to be missing the shift and behaving as if it's business as usual.  Let's see if and how consumers truly begin to talk back to events such as this with swift and immediate reaction by not only by-passing purchases but creating crowd-gathered demands directed to artists when they behave in such a manner.  We've all had break-ups before and been through off by them,  RiRi, but one can't just show up 3 hours late for work and not expect anyone to notice....

Fans bite back today regarding Rihanna.  As everyone knows, the sexy pop singer is on tour, but encountering yet more problems. The entourage was set to hit Boston but showed up three hours late.  it is reported that the singer offered no excuse and even put on a poor show.  Fans were truly not having it and began booing.  Jump down to check out some of the comments from the digital sphere on this one!

She totally disrespected her fans. They should respond by giving her none of their hard earned money going forward...

It's SO not easy being Mizz Kardashian.  The comment-sphere is going wild over this one, but look closely.  While it might just seem like a heap of sarcasm, and it is, more can be learned.  There is a backlash here, and it seems to reflect an interesting mix of not only re-evaluation of celebrity and who we hold in such esteem but also class demarcation.  Kardashian is being seen as a target and perhaps a symbol of a change in tide where there is an about-face on those once loved for their over-the-topness in all things.  In the SmartPower era, this is a no-go, yet many celebs simply do not realize this and will fast become ostracized not only by the inner circle but by the masses.  We're undergoing a major paradigm shift in consciousness that reflect new values.  If you don't tune into that, you could just find yourself on the outs (as Kim K. most certainly will find herself another rung down when she awakens tomorrow).  Yikes!

The night has barely begun at what is called the Fashion Oscars, the annual Met Ball gala, but the comment-sphere is already going strong on Kim Kardashian's attire.  Photos hit the digital realm in moments and media couldn't wait to post the head to toe floral number that Kardashian is sporting.  Media reports say that Kardashian's stylist insisted on sleeves at the last minute resulting in a uni-look that is, at best, unflattering.  We have to jump to the comment arean this second to check out the snap, crackle & pop!

This is such an interesting scenario because many of the commenters see the Paltrow pick as  demonstrative of what a more holistic definition of beauty might be, that is, not solely based on facial features but other qualities and characteristics.  However, some simply see it as a ploy given that it coincides nicely with the timing of Paltrow's latest flick.  There seems to be a huge sense that readers feel they are being lied to or manipulated in some way, precisely because they do not like a lot of what this celebrated figure seems to represent (hence the Most Hated title given to her about a week prior).  What we are witnessing here is a tug-of-war in values as we watch social shift.  There may be agreement that the definition of beauty could be expanded, but the public is not certain that it deems that a person who has been said to have often unattainable, elite lifestyle patterns as one that should be the example of ideal goals.  Individuals want to define for themselves what is appropriate and is well-aware that it could contain several different paths and those paths communicated by people who seem to be accessible and warm.  Watch for more heat to come up around lists that mainstream media continues to create until it begins to better pair those included on the list with the fast-changing values of the SmartPower era.

The comments are STILL going strong over this Hollywood-media move. So we all know that actress, gluten-free champion Gwyneth Paltrow has been named the World’s Most Beautiful Woman by People magazine. The Iron Man 3 actress has been awarded the annual honour by the People magazine beating off competition from the likes of Amanda Seyfried, Jennifer Lawrence, Pink and Halle Berry. However, Gwyneth insists that if people could see her at home in her casual clothes they wouldn’t think she was so beautiful. Speaking to the publication, she said: “Around the house, I’m in jeans and a T-shirt. I don’t really wear make-up.” In September, People magazine also honoured Gwyneth for being the World’s Best-Dressed Woman.  We must go to the comment arena to see how Paltrow's self-assessment matches that of the public.
