where the SmartPower generation connects

Slippery slope for Rihanna, huh?  In the SmartPower era where individuals are taking more control than ever, under-estimating both their needs and power is dangerous.  This is particularly true for the realm of celebrity, that we have said repeatedly here, is undergoing re-evaluation.  The celebrities still seem to be missing the shift and behaving as if it's business as usual.  Let's see if and how consumers truly begin to talk back to events such as this with swift and immediate reaction by not only by-passing purchases but creating crowd-gathered demands directed to artists when they behave in such a manner.  We've all had break-ups before and been through off by them,  RiRi, but one can't just show up 3 hours late for work and not expect anyone to notice....

Fans bite back today regarding Rihanna.  As everyone knows, the sexy pop singer is on tour, but encountering yet more problems. The entourage was set to hit Boston but showed up three hours late.  it is reported that the singer offered no excuse and even put on a poor show.  Fans were truly not having it and began booing.  Jump down to check out some of the comments from the digital sphere on this one!

What Others Are Saying...

Dear Rhianna, everyone is sick of your antics. If you spent as much time writing songs as you do partying and updating instagram you might not have to rely on more talented people to make you successful.

Source:

She totally disrespected her fans. They should respond by giving her none of their hard earned money going forward...

Source:

I have seen a multitude of articles along the same vein...Rhianna making people wait for hours to see her in concert, at a showing, etc, blah blah. If those people are so angered by her disrespect, why don't they show it where it counts? Her wallet.

This is such an interesting scenario because many of the commenters see the Paltrow pick as  demonstrative of what a more holistic definition of beauty might be, that is, not solely based on facial features but other qualities and characteristics.  However, some simply see it as a ploy given that it coincides nicely with the timing of Paltrow's latest flick.  There seems to be a huge sense that readers feel they are being lied to or manipulated in some way, precisely because they do not like a lot of what this celebrated figure seems to represent (hence the Most Hated title given to her about a week prior).  What we are witnessing here is a tug-of-war in values as we watch social shift.  There may be agreement that the definition of beauty could be expanded, but the public is not certain that it deems that a person who has been said to have often unattainable, elite lifestyle patterns as one that should be the example of ideal goals.  Individuals want to define for themselves what is appropriate and is well-aware that it could contain several different paths and those paths communicated by people who seem to be accessible and warm.  Watch for more heat to come up around lists that mainstream media continues to create until it begins to better pair those included on the list with the fast-changing values of the SmartPower era.

The comments are STILL going strong over this Hollywood-media move. So we all know that actress, gluten-free champion Gwyneth Paltrow has been named the World’s Most Beautiful Woman by People magazine. The Iron Man 3 actress has been awarded the annual honour by the People magazine beating off competition from the likes of Amanda Seyfried, Jennifer Lawrence, Pink and Halle Berry. However, Gwyneth insists that if people could see her at home in her casual clothes they wouldn’t think she was so beautiful. Speaking to the publication, she said: “Around the house, I’m in jeans and a T-shirt. I don’t really wear make-up.” In September, People magazine also honoured Gwyneth for being the World’s Best-Dressed Woman.  We must go to the comment arena to see how Paltrow's self-assessment matches that of the public.

What Others Are Saying...

What a crock of sh*t. She is definitely pretty, but the most beautiful? Give me a break....

If she's go great why was she voted the #1 most hated celebrity...

Sorry, G.P.  try again.  It's positioning like this that has also apparently earned Ms. Paltrow a least-liked celebrity thumbs down as well.  People just aren't having the "oops a wardrobe malfunction conveniently right when I'm trying to sell tickets to my new film" any longer.  What we see in the comment arena is not only the value of transparency (no pun intended), but also this deeper shift toward re-evaluation of celebrity and celebrities.  The average reader is thinking more and more for him/herself asking why we should believe what such notables say, if their values are appropriate and more.  But up there where the air is thin, we think the celebs have no idea about this new level of social trend.  Let's hope the costume selection in the film leaves a little more to the imagination.

Reverberating through the comment arena now: Gwyneth Paltrow.  Seems the actress had to undergo an emergency grooming session before wearing her racy outfit at the 'Iron Man 3' premiere in Los Angeles. The 40-year-old actress made jaws drop on the red carpet on early this week her revealing Antonio Beradi dress, which showed she wasn't wearing any underwear, but she admits she had to reach for a last minute razor after realizing knickers weren't an option with the garment at the last minute. Speaking on an episode of the 'The Ellen DeGeneres Show', Paltrow - who was named World's Most Beautiful Woman by People magazine this week - said: ''I kind of had a disaster. I was going to a show and I changed there and I knew I couldn't wear underwear. I don't think I can tell this story on TV ... Well, let's just say everyone went scrambling for a razor ... so I went from being the most beautiful to the most humiliated, in one day. I work a 70s vibe. You know what I mean?'' Let see what the comment sphere is saying about Paltrow's fashion mishap.

What Others Are Saying...

Why would you order up & be fitted for such a dress & then "at the last minute" claim to be surprised that you couldn't wear underwear with it?....

Source:

Never mind the dress. Does she ever spend time with her family. She's always all over the place...

Source:

It's known as pick something else to wear rather than be humiliated, my dear. I'm sure you have entire closets full of beautiful dresses that would have been more tasteful...

Well, while some have said that Bieber has taught teens all over the world who Anne Frank was (as if, at least, western schools don't already do that); many are up in arms.  What happened to the celeb handlers and publicist training prior to a visit like this?  In the new SmartPower era celebs, no matter their age, are going to have to be more and more sensitive to their public speech.  Why?  Because we are going through a chance in deciding exactly what celebrity is, what it means and just who is actually lauded for what.  Bieber's comment has gotten people talking on multiple levels. But will many ego-centric celebs think before they speak going forward?  Only time will tell.....

Chatter around this gaffe by Bieber is continuing to grow.  Pop mega star Justin Bieber is on a European tour. He was in Amsterdam and took some time to visit the historical Anne Frank Museum. Anne Frank died a teenager in a Nazi concentration camp in 1945. In the guest book, Bieber wrote: ""Truly inspiring to be able to come here. Anne was a great girl. Hopefully she would have been a belieber." Only the last part got negative reviews criticizing the Canadian for being an egomaniac. His girl fans are known as "beliebers." Grown-ups called Bieber an "idiot" on social media. Anne Frank hid with her family in the "secret annex" of an Amsterdam house for two years before she was captured by Nazis in 1944.  Let's turn to the comment-sphere....

What Others Are Saying...

He's 19.

If you were Jewish you would be horrified at Justin Beiber did. Anne Franks home was not the place to joke around ... It is disgrace to all the Jews who were murdered just because of their religion. I feel he only went to Anne Frank’s home for a photo ...

Source:

... Bieber was an insensitive, self-centered punk for the comment he wrote in the guestbook. ... it was an inappropriate comment. ... This photo showing him playing around in the museum proves how immature he is. Even little kids are taught by their parents to behave properly in these places. Justin needs some remedial parenting.

How interesting.  If you recall, when the focus was on Jay-Z and Beyonce, the comment arena was torn between seeing the couple as insensitive/entitled versus having to work within a situation that was simply not right.  Now with Pitbull's chiming in, seems like - due perhaps in large part to his being Cuban - the policies toward Cuba are being questioned and compared to that of other countries that have social issues as well.  Just how much effect does celebrity voice and action have on such issues.  Funny that it seems that when the politics are more subtle and discussed in the celeb's natural habitat of, say, film or music; the public seems to respond more openly.  As we see celebrity being re-thought, this is something for those who have large soapboxes to keep in mind.  This could turn out to be an interesting trend, if harnessed the right way.  (wonder if Sen. Rubio is regretting his prior critique of Pitbull now?  Hmmm...)

This just won't rest, and commenters continue to exchange strong views with the force of the Williams sisters on the tennis court.  Now recording artist Pitbull has released a new track in response to  Jay-Z and Beyoncé’s vacation in Cuba. As we all know, the superstar couple headed to Cuba to celebrate their fifth wedding anniversary earlier this month, leading certain U.S. politicians to question whether the couple was given the appropriate clearance as American tourists. U.S. citizens visiting Cuba need authorization before they can visit the Communist country. It was later determined the pair was given travel permission for academic and cultural purposes. Some still aren't buying it. Jay-Z took response to government leaders and members of the media for criticizing the legality of his trip in his new track, "Open Letter." Now Pitbull, whose parents were born in Cuba, has recorded a remix of Jay-Z's song, "Open Letter Freestyle," in a hope to silence the backlash and offer the musicians his support. In one verse, Pitbull raps, "Question of the night, would they have messed with Mr. Carter if he was white?" and in another line he adds, "Politicians love to hate you/but then run away when it's time to debate you." And referring to the tune as his gift to the couple, he says, "Happy fifth year anniversary, Jay and Bey. Don't worry, it's on me." To the comment arena!

What Others Are Saying...

I'm not a big fan of Pitbull's continued efforts to become a Disney-quality star, but the man does have dignity and it continues to get stronger as he morphs into a more mainstream act. He makes a good point about families being separated and using the opportunity to turn it into a lesson was brilliant...

Seems people just can't stop commenting on this woman no matter whether it's ridicule or encouragement.  It's been several years, but there are always comments on this notable even though the story doesn't seem to change much.  Funny that as we are re-evaluating celebrity, that there is consistency with LiLo.  Perhaps we like have the cautionary tale always near by in order to remind us that we're all fighting our demons somehow.  While there are definitely saracastic comments galore, seems as though there is mostly strong support for Lohan to really get it right this time.  Guess this means that even in the SmartPower era, redemption is still a much-valued story. Naturally, we'll all be watching to see just how this episode concludes....

What would the digital comment arena be without celebrity musings.  Here's the latest: Lindsay Lohan appeared on "The Late Show With David Letterman" and discussed her upcoming court-ordered trip to rehab, calling it a "blessing". Lohan will be in rehab for three months, starting on May 2. The action was part of a plea deal in March that allowed her to avoid jail. In addition she will do 30 days of community labor. Lohan also agreed to pay an undisclosed fine and attend 18 months of psychological therapy. Lohan’s rehab will be “locked,” which means she will not be able to go home once she enters the program. If she completes all the terms of the deal, a 180-day jail sentence will be waived. The deal was struck just as Lohan’s trial on charges that she lied to police about whether she was behind the wheel in a June car crash that briefly sent her to the hospital was set to begin. The 26-year-old actress had pleaded not guilty to three misdemeanor charges filed after the accident: reckless driving, lying to police and obstructing officers from performing their duties. Now, let's see if the comments will be a blessing to Lindsay, or not....

What Others Are Saying...

The real tragedy is, "Lilo" makes her drug / alcohol / rehab all seem glamorous... She is always photographed in designer clothes, hair and make-up professionally done all while she is walking into court, or coming out of a club. I can see how she is sending wrong messages to the youth of our society...

Source:

...Hard to believe she's only 26, she looks twice her age. Good to hear she's going back to rehab. Maybe the fourth time will be the charm

Source:

Seriously people, grow up. It's like you are wanting her to fail. Addiction is scary stuff... Lindsey, I wish you well. Hang in there, give it all you got and give them hell. Work hard in rehab and show everyone a success story. Give them hope.

It has been said by certain sociologists that fascination with celebrity is about transcending social class.  But it seems that the expansion of those defined as celebrity is confounding this theory.  We see lots of comments more about class in the comment arena and its stereotypical intersection with intelligence more than any comments of condolence or sympathy.  As we use celebrity to subsconsciously exmine social change, could it be that these comments reflect not only the growing wealth gap in America but also that of class distinction.  Is the Honey Boo-Booism of reality tv benefiting or hindering overal social relations?  Hmmmm......

Biggest celeb news of the moment has all eyes on MTV for the moment. Shooting for the second season of the MTV reality show “BUCKWILD” has been suspended after Shain Gandee was found dead along with two others inside a Ford Bronco in West Virginia. The vehicle was found partially submerged in a deep mud pit about a mile from his home near Sissonville. His uncle and another man were also found in the car. Kanawha County Sheriff’s Cpl. B.D. Humphreys said the 1984 Ford Bronco’s muffler was below the surface and that mud covered the passenger side. The sheriff’s department said Tuesday that autopsies found that all three men died of accidental carbon monoxide poisoning. If the muffler was submerged and the engine kept running, it’s possible the cabin of the vehicle could have filled with the fatal gas from the exhaust. MTV issued a statement saying it was shocked and saddened to learn of its star’s death. Shooting for the second season of “BUCKWILD” had begun, but the network has now announced that it has suspended taping. MTV said the half-hour series in the old “Jersey Shore” time slot was pulling in an average of 3 million viewers per episode since its premiere and was the No. 1 original cable series on Thursday nights among 12- to 34-year-olds. Let's see what viewers have to say about the incident.

Interesting!  Though Walters had come under fire for "being out of touch" particularly regarding her most recent "10 Most Fascinating People", looks like many wish her nothing but a wonderful retirement and are impressed with her achievements to this age.  What may be more important to note here is that not only the face of media is fast-changing and the old-guard (thankfully?) moving on en masse, but that the outlets we have for media are becoming vastly different. Our tastes and needs are vastly expanded since the advent of television.  Budgets are different, traditional coverage is being turned away from; and we see tech helping the disruption via elements such as Flipboard announcing its ability to enable users to make their own digital magazines (and gained 100,000 takers in just 24 hours).  Stay alert people, the control is shifting.  This is what SmartPower is about!

One of the most talked about items in news on notables of the past couple of days has been the Barbara Walters retirement! Legendary television host and interviewer Barbara Walters is hanging up her hat. The 83 year-old wonder announced  that she will be retiring in May of 2014. Barbara Walters has broken the glass ceiling for women in television and news over the years. She was the first female host of the "Today"  in 1974 and continued to break records and change the game for the rest of her career. Many say that she will be sorely missed. What says the comment arena? Will ot miss Barbara Walters??

What Others Are Saying...

Wow I never realized she is 83 :) She looks GRRREAT!!!! I wish Barbara Walters only the best...

Good for her...time for the View to go also. It use to be great to watch but it has gotten so out of hand and stupid. Havent watched it for years...

Okay, so it seems this incident has given a wide range of comments.  We've investigated and found everything from outrage, to amusement, to non-chalance.  When boundaries such as this become strongly pushed, it provides an opportunity for dialogue on values. Watch for image to be at the forefront of these discussions, Ladies & Gentlemen, precisely because it is so powerful.  What's the old adage, a picture is worth a thousand words?  What has been missed, however, is not the surface message of these images but the intent behind them.  Are we examining how foolish we think all these people are?  How casually they treat others and/or norms that we hold important? How superficial notables can (should?) easily be disgarded in the SmartPower era? Ah, that's when it gets interesting.  India just may be onto something, in terms of deep provocation.  Hmmmm.....

And now for more in the world of the celeb news.  In case you missed the coverage: The Ford Figo isn’t available in America; but it is a compact sedan sold in other countries ,and one of it’s claims to fame is that is has a large trunk for cargo space. Ford India and a British ad agency released unauthorized ads related to the Ford Figo that show three women, bound and gagged in the trunk. The images are caricatures of famous people. One features Italy's Silvio Berlusconi in the front grinning happily. (Berlusconi is currently part of a sex scandal with a minor.) There are three women in the trunk of the Figo, two of the female caricatures are thought to be the once showgirl, now politician, Nicole Minetti, and an erotic pole dancer by the name of Karima El Mahroug who is part of the Berlusconi sex scandal. The ad’s tagline is “Leave your worries behind with Figo’s extra-large boot.” There were other ads as well, one featuring socialite Paris Hilton with Kardashian sisters in the trunk bound and nearly nude. This ad campaign has reportedly offended many, including the notables themselves. The Ford India statement said, “We deeply regret this incident and agree with our agency partners that it should have never happened. The posters are contrary to the standards of professionalism and decency within Ford and our agency partners. Together with our partners, we are reviewing approval and oversight processes to help ensure nothing like this ever happens again.” Uh-huh.  Well, let's see what the comment arena has to say and what that sentiment means in society and culture today.

What Others Are Saying...

These ads were alright with the agency...? Really? A virulent rape culture like India and rape/bondage is used to sell ... cars?

Source:

It's freaking hilarious, if you ask me. It could have been worse, like dead bodies stacked up in back with the car being parked at a garbage dump to get rid of them...

Source:

I've worked in an agency, so it's not surprising to me when stuff like this happens. During the creative process, people start making bogus products to blow off steam and have a laugh amongst themselves. My guess is they were just screwing around and broke the cardinal rule: destroy all evidence... I'm reasonably sure Ford had nothing to do with it; just some ad agency monkeys screwing around.

Out with the old, as they say... and not really so much as in age.  This is about analog thinkers versus digital thinkers, meaning those who "get" the new SmartPower age and those who don't. So much of the old regime across all media is fading away because we are truly coming into a new time.  Those who sense that are making changes.  The funny thing is, those who sense that and make changes that look just about as the old did, will find themselves at the bottom of marketshare.  There will be more changes on the horizon and media will begin to look very different over the next several years. In the meantime, we'll be checking for ?uestlove's afro-pick for sure, no matter what the time slot!

Still in celeb news, Leno versus Fallon! Jay Leno, late-night heavyweight, has recently been delivered a stifling blow from the executives at NBC. Sources have confirmed that NBC plans to replace the punchline king with newcomer Jimmy Fallon in the fall of 2014. Leno, who has been hosting The Tonight Show with Jay Leno since 1992 has interviewed legends and made the network millions of dollars. Unfortunately, none of that seems to matter. Sources claim that the network simply believes that Leno "skews old" and that Saturday Night Live alumn, Jimmy Fallon, would be the best fit to skew the ratings back toward the youth demo (and advertiser fave) and breath new life into the legendary show. So, are you sad to see Leno go, or happy to see Fallon coming? Sound off, below!...

What Others Are Saying...

...Leno has no lead-ins either, yet he is still #1 late nights...NBC is doing worse now during prime-time than they were doing when Conan was failing in the late night time slot...Leno, whether you like Leno or not, is doing something right to bring in the viewers and to get the show back to #1...

Source:

I know his writers play a large part in this, but Jay Leno is probably one of the most hackneyed comedians in the business...his jokes are horribly telegraphed. I'm amazed he's carried this crown for being the "King of Late Night" for so long...

Source:

I look forward to 'Tonight' hosted by Jimmy Fallon...hope the network execs allow him to continue the kind of show that he has now and not insist that he adopt a more staid, formulaic version of past 'Tonight' incarnations.
