politics

Well, without a doubt, many have found the jokes and zingers hilarious.  However, what seems to keep coming up in the comment arena is the deeper questioning of the mix of corporations, hollywood celebs and political journalists with public servants.  This is a tricky time for such a mix not only because individuals are starting to question "authority" and how it conducts itself, but also as they re-examine celebrity and hold it to greater scrutiny; the combo can be one which is searing.  Think anyone at these types of events recognizes this trend?  Cares?  Hmmm....we'll have to watch and see just how much more years these types of events actually get in our society (or better yet, how they might be renamed in order to still carry out certain agendas and goals).  In the meantime, we've gotta admit, the President's joke regarding Jay-Z was spot on.  Anyway, it's been said that politics is like Hollywood for the unattractive.  Curious how the two are interesecting more and more in new ways to drive all kinds of ideas.  Keep watching....

Much chatter in the comment-sphere spilling over into today about all the celebs at the White House Correspondents Dinner.  By now many know that celebrities from Sophia Vergara to Kerry Washington and more were mixing and mingling with politicos and political journalists.  Viral videos abound on hottest moments/jokes from both host Conan O'Brien and President Obama.  But what really has people talking is the "Steven Spielberg's 'Obama' " spoof video regarding Spielberg's next film.  While the media can't get enough of basking in the glow of it all today, it seems the much of the public has its eyebrows raised as to the notables selected and the meaning of it all. Let's check it out....

What Others Are Saying...

Amazing how Hollywood actors are now correspondents . Guess without Hollywood there only be about a dozen reporters show up

Catch our podcast episode 275 on this for sure to see how things could go for Affleck on this should he decide to run!  www.ldcoleman.com/radio

Actor and director, Ben Affleck is said to be a candidate for John Kerry's seat in Senate. Affleck has not say yes to this proposition, but he has not say no either. While on CBS News Face the Nation, host Bob Schieffer brought up the question of his political future. Affleck's response was "I’m not going to get into speculation about my political future ... I do have a great fondness and admiration for the political process in this country." While his reply doesn't give a direct answer either way it does begin to spark the question of do we want Ben Affleck for Senate?

What Others Are Saying...

... Affleck is a smart, talented business guy who made on a lot of money on his own. At the very least, he wouldn't be any worse than some of the Senators we have now.

Source:

... If Affleck is as good of a senator as an actor we are all so screwed

Source:

Why is it that whenever a celebrity wants to jump into politics, it is usually at the Senate level (no prior experience in government)? Unfortunately, our society is so infatuated with Hollywood, that Honey Boo-Boo or Kim Khardashian could make serious runs ... Personally, I would rather elect a "nobody" who has actually lived in the Real World......

Ah, the Palins. Always good for controversy and comments.  Funny that no one has mentioned how "gay" is automatically derogatory and no counter-suit for that.  Hmmmm... In terms of celebrity, this is not the first time the comment-sphere has questioned Palin's membership card to that privileged club.  Thing is, celebrity is fast-being re-defined in our new era.  Yet many people simply do not feel comfortable with people re-creating and re-defining what it means to be "celebrated."  Look out because in the age of SmartPower where people are self-determinant, there will be even more new types of notables stepping into the ring.  Everyone is watching and judging like never before.  If it's true that we are using celebrity to work out our views on new roles in society, this will be an interesting journey to track!

While filming her A&E television serie, Bristol Palin: Life's a Tripp, Stephen Hanks was caught on tape calling Sarah Palin a "whore" and "evil". Bristol refuted those comments by calling him "gay," which she claimed she could tell just by looking at him. The judge ruled that he has to pay $75,000 in damages, yet Hanks is still arguing that he did not sign a waiver for the tape to be aired. The First Amendment supports Bristol, and the following Americans' comments...

Ah, celebs converging with politics in this 11th hour.  See what this Jay-Z move really means and hear what more scathing things people have to say when you check out our podcast today on this very topic.  It's only a few minutes, check it out right now after you comment at www.ldcoleman.com/radio.

After hosting a fundraising dinner for President Barack Obama, hip-hop mogul Jay-Z stars in a new ad-of-sorts trying to encourage more people to vote for Obama. In the one-minute video, Jay-Z said Obama represents the hope of many American and the possibilities they have. Jay-Z tries to encourage people to exercise their right to vote -- something that, he says, so far has been silent. On this debate night, let's see what his fellow Americans think of his latest move.

What Others Are Saying...

... Jay is where he is, because white, corporate Amerikkka has figured out that he has a lot of influence with the youth ... Yeah i said it.

Source:

... Funny, a 1 minute video and not one mention of what Obama has done in black communities to help them. Unemployment is still above 13% amongst blacks. They're kids are still stuck in horrible schools. The vote empowered them to be heard? Puleez! ...

Source:

The ad stinks. It's too long and too languid. ... Jay-Z looks like he's about to slide out of the chair. ... Why does he look like slob in this ad.

Seems like from most of the comments we sourced that people are not really feeling something which is apparently supposed to create rallying support for the other side.  Perhaps the reaction is demonstrating that celebrity brings awareness, but in this day and age; people are looking for greater depth than these notables apparently represent.  There seems to be a need for greater depth and realism.  Not to say that these women aren't genuine, but perhaps if their feelings and concern were made more plain throughout the year rather than conveniently right around election time; the message would just be taken much more seriously.  The celeb game has changed since the '08 campaign.  Thing is, have the Dem's gotten that email message??

Actresses Scarlett Johansson, Eva Longoria and Kerry Washington, who are known to be pro-choice, star in a new ad attacking Mitt Romney and his plan to end funding for Planned Parenthood. The three actresses take turns in saying that Mitt Romney is for ending funding to Planned Parenthood including cancer screenings and that he’d overturn Roe v. Wade. In the ad, Johansson says “We have Republicans trying to redefine rape.” The ad is 30 seconds long and is paid for by the MoveOn group. Constituents say what?

What Others Are Saying...

I wish these ads were better. I'm glad people are raising awareness ... It'd be far better if people actually quoted Republicans. Todd Akin got so much shit and he's not nearly as crazy as some other people running for office.

Oooooh....comment-sphere not liking this one too much at all.  Guess they're not Snoop fans?  Lost their sense of humor due to the economy?  What?  This seems to be loaded for people due to the convergence of celebrity, politics and race.  Anyone could have posted something like this, but Snoop's celebrated status takes it to the next level.  Many people seem genuinely uncomfortable because Snoop seems to simply draw out sentiment that is underlying daily within a society that still has many, many unresolved issues about race.  They are then easily laid on Snoop when, of course, it's a larger societal responsiblity in this supposed "post-racial" era.  Watch for more such in your face provocation from hip hop. Here's something we know for sure: Snoop ain't losin' any sleep over this and in the process of lightin' one up to boot.

The rapper, turned reggae artist, recently published a handwritten list on Instagram as to why he should vote for President Obama, and not vote for Mitt Romney in the upcoming November election. Some notable reasons as to vote for Obama consisted of, "2. He mad cool yo" and "6. He's BFFS with Jay-Z". On the other hand, reasons to not vote for Romney included, "2. This muthafucka's name is Mitt", which is also number 6 and 10, and "9. He reminds me of every boss I ever hated". In spite of this 'jesty' picture, he is promoting voting among his followers and supporters. That justifies his reasons, right?

What Others Are Saying...

If somebody wrote out a list of reasons to vote against Obama, and one of the reasons was "The f*cker's name is Barack," I can't think of a single person who would think it's even remotely clever. Sometimes it seems like the media enforces a kind of affirmative action for black-originating humor. Just have a black person say "ho" and all of a sudden it's the epitome of wit.

Source:

Interesting that he completely neglected to mention the #1 reasons. Is this even him?

Source:

This article is offensive and silly. Deep emotional truths? Sure, if you want to play on all of the stereotypes of black people. Vote for Obama because he has a good jump shot, wears a du-rag, and smokes Newports? Don't vote for Mitt because of his name, the fact that he doesn't have more than one wife, and looks racist? Both sides play into stereotypes of race and religion, which is something that this country doesn't need.

This mirrors what we recently wrote in our "Politics" section. See the post regarding Obama being criticized for current Middle East policy.  Look at how they echo each other....

Rap mogul Jay-Z and his wife superstar singer Beyonce hosted a fundraiser at Jay-Z's 40/40 club in Manhattan in support of President Barack Obama. Tickets cost $40,000 a person. Beyonce introduced the Obama in a short speech saying she and Jay-Z believed in his vision for America. Obama compared himself to Jay-Z by joking that their wives were the more popular ones among the people. About 100 were present and over $4 million was raised for the Obama Biden re-election campaign. So what do the little people who could not afford the entry think?

What Others Are Saying...

... Unfortunately, journalism is dead in America. It's all Obama, all the time. They prop him up every day, and do everything in their power to get him reelected. It's DISGUSTING. ...

Source:

Unfortunately, we don't have a president. We have a celebrity, and he appeals to people who are enthralled by celebrities. ... If you've never watched the movie "Idiocracy", I'd suggest you do. ...

What a lightning rod, that Lindsay Lohan.  Her rep mixed with the fact that the new mind-set seems to shun direct celebrity voice in politics makes for a strong cocktail of comments.  Naturally, none supporting her on this but rather providing opportunity for larger discussion around fiscal responsibility, intelligent thought, transparency - elements with higher and higher value being placed as we move futher into the new social dynamic between us all.  But the real question is: what would we do without Twitter to get such gems from good ol' LiLo?

President Obama recently tweeted a statement regarding those he has applied tax cuts to, including small business owners and middle-class families. Shortly after, actress Lindsay Lohan tweeted at Obama saying that "we also need to cut them for those that are listed on Forbes as 'millionaires'". Nevertheless, the actress who is reportedly supposed to earn $2 million this year, is not an avid conservative, but is she a good spokeswoman?

What Others Are Saying...

I seriously doubt her finances are in order, and don't doubt the sincerity of her tweet. However, drugs, partying, lawyers fees, and the fact that she's on the B/C-list...on top of the syntax issues in her tweet, make me LOL.

Source:

She's talking about her own money issues obviously. You're missing the point of her tweet. She's listed on forbes as being a millionaire but really she's broke. This is admission by her that she's struggling...

Source:

...I kind of like having people like Lindsay Lohan and Jenny McCarthy around. When they state an opinion, you can pretty much guarantee that that argument is completely stupid...but frankly hearing those two idiots state their beliefs with such conviction is an even more compelling argment against them. I mean, if they told me the world was round, I'd start to wonder if it's really flat, based solely on my knowledge of them.

What?  Minaj do something just to try and draw attention to herself? Never! LMAO But what is interesting here is not so much the debate as to whether celebs should get involved in politics (though that is obviously still present and represented below), but how a Black recording artist (whether playful or authentic) has created a conversation about the fact that maybe the Black-Democrat automatic luv expectancy should start to become questioned  a bit more. Leave it to Nicki.  The anger around the action, the finger-pointing of dissension from the ranks is the real social hot button.  And not only a person of color, but a female of color creates even greater furvor.  How dare her! Let's see where Nicki goes on this one.  She has the stage. Will she chang that pink lipstick to an even brighter hue and  run with it for all it's worth? Placing bets.

Nicki Minaj, born in Trinidad and Tobago but raised in New York City, publicly announced on fellow-rapper Lil Wayne's mix tape "Dedication 4" that she was going to vote for Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney. It is not clear whether Minaj is registered to vote in the U.S. Some celebrities don't believe Minaj is serious about her political preferences. Rapper Talib Kweli tweeted that in his opinion Minaj is only trying to draw some attention to herself. The fans think....

What Others Are Saying...

... The liberals have Chicken Littled themselves to death over the race issue.  Obama could be the "One" that breaks the black vote solidarity with the left. ... Some black celebrities and a few black congressmen and Mia Love defecting from the Dems. A light at the end of the tunnel? ...

Source:

Don't know if she meant the endorsement or not ... How scary to be in the public eye and be on the receiving end of all that over an opinion included in a song lyric. ... It would be really great if she came out with some kind of statement exposing this hostility. ...

Sociologist C. Wright Mills wrote in "The Power Elite" back in the 40's the celebrity class, political and business elite had just started to merge at that time replacing the original esteemed level of established American wealthy families.  He said that around this time, the value Americans place on not only competition but being the best within one's arena was part of the factor which brought these types of people together.  And as they did so, the light from one - especially the actor - helped the other to shine more brightly.  Seems like nothing has changed in these past four decades, huh?  Seems like most of the comment-sphere reflects this sentiment even if it is subsconscious.  And it goes without saying that those who write "i don't care", obviously do if they can take the time to write "I don't care."  LOL.  Happy watching tonight, Everyone.

The Republican National Convention has planned a mystery guest for their finale, and absolutely no one - including the Romney's - know who it is. The 'To Be Announced' speaker has been squeezed between a performance by singer Taylor Hicks, and a speech by Florida GOP Senator Marco Rubio. Nevertheless, one Republican source has assured FoxNews.com that the speaker will be Clint Eastwood, the Academy Award winner and former mayor of Carmel. Let us see whether followers think he will be well received, or whether he could get a mixed reaction due to this Hollywood-leery crowd. (posted originally at noonET 8/30. Since then, it has been confirmed)

What Others Are Saying...

I think Clint Eastwood has been his own man and marched to his own drummer. I have never seen him as a Hollywood "sheep". My impression of him is that he could be my neighbor....he acts like a regular guy. I like him....
