Barack Obama

Sat, 04/06/2013 - 6:45pm

Yes, people were paying attention to the Obama's remarks and had some of their own.  This is about politics, but perhaps more what we see is how gender-relations are examined via such prominent political figures - what they say, how they think.  What are the roles of women and childcare, how should it be shared, what part do looks play in obtaining high-profile positions? Maybe the most interesting thing is that until people in major positions make certain comments, these very important social areas are barely discussed on a large scale.  This may be why the people felt the need to throw in their two cents and more.  As we witness greater societal shift, word choice of politicos will be scrutinized even more frequently as it provides us with the opportunity to examine what values we want to keep and what values we want to put to the side.  Everything can't, nor should it be, edited at all times.  But we're sure the Obamas were probably happy to have a chill weekend after uttering such words, huh?

It's been a bizarre week for President Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama, and it's made for much fall out over the weekend in the comment space.  The President made what many people say "a sexist comment" calling California Attorney General Kamala Harris "by far the best-looking attorney general in the country." Obama got a lot of heat for it with people saying he diminished her qualities for the job. He later apologized saying he meant in no way to disrespect her. Michelle Obama also had a bad week with the media attention. In an interview she slipped and said she was "s busy single mother." She immediately corrected herself by saying "he's there," but her comments were all over the news later that day.  Let's turn to the real action space of the digital comment arena and see if the media view runs parallel to that of public opinion in terms of "severity" of the remarks....

What Others Are Saying...

If this comment were made by a Republican there would be blood in the media. ... No one understands the blessings and burdens of single motherhood ... Having a husband who works long hours doesn't cut it.

Typical Black woman response they don't respect black men even if your married to the most powerful black man on the planet ... always want to be single parents saying they don't need Men ...

...I'm going to start calling him No Spine Obama. He needs to learn he sets the agenda, he's the President and if anybody has been subjected to insulting comments, it's been him. This was a compliment, she took it that way and it was an appropriate one at that and he apologizes? ...

Well, we've said that the SmartPower era is indicative of "bottom up."  Individuals taking the reigns and moving away from approval from authority.  Looks like Rodman is deciding to run with this phenomenon x10! Interesting to note that a good number of commenters don't believe that Rodman was acting on his own.  Here we see more of that trust-deficit that is growing in our culture.  (and what perfect timing, right before Rodman's gig on "The Apprentice"!) Who knows what's real and what isn't, but one thing is sure, this is a new take on politics!  What we wanna know is, how did Rodman make the leap from Dr. Drew's re-hab show to hanging with foreign presidents?!

Dennis Rodman: former Chicago Bull, five-time NBA Champion, and lover of all things eccentric has recently returned from a small trip to North Korea to visit its young leader, Kim Jong Un. On the trip, Rodman spoke with Un about everything from current affairs,  to the shared passion for basketball that he has in common with President Barack Obama.  Rodman and Un even attended a basketball game together. Upon his arrival back to the states, Rodman has claimed that all Un wants is a call from President Obama. Spokesman for the White House, Jay Carney, released a statement today saying that the North Korean government should be more concerned with governing its people than "celebrity sporting events".  Let's see how this surprising Rodman's foray into politics is being received....

What Others Are Saying...

Dennis Rodman is a like a crazy cartoon character. This whole thing is out of some... reality TV show...! I find it hilarious, frightening and bizarre all at the same time!

If anybody thinks that no one in our government knew that Dennis Rodman was going on that trip, I have a bridge I would like to sell you...

It may be Fat Tuesday, but many also have an eye - albeit a critical one - toward the SOTU.  Interesting how people like to see this event to forecast. People like to predict.  It seems to give us some sense of stability in a time where flux is definitely the new norm.  What is interesting to note is that some are still concerned with the intersection of politics and Hollywood.  This is something to watch and note for a change is coming here.  In the meantime, be sure to check back for our analysis on comment-sphere reaction to the SOTU. That's where the action will be!  Stay tuned!!!

Tonight, President Obama will deliver his fourth State of the Union address to Congress, Supreme Court Justices, the Joint Chiefs of Staff, invited guests, and the public. In past years, the State of the Union address has been an opportunity for the president to lay out policy priorities and sometimes even for the mention of an unexpected and new initiative. Obama's 2013 speech is scheduled for 9 p.m. EST.  All major network and cable news channels will be broadcasting the speech and even online websites will be available. There is an expected focus on the economy, immigration, job creation, gun control, and clean energy. Sen. Marco Rubio will be responding to Obama's speech on behalf of the Republican party.  What is the public expecting to hear?

What Others Are Saying...

Obama should move this address from Congress to Hollywood! ... Much more fitting, his core target audience and such.

Obama has relegated foreign policy to a secondary status, resulting in the opportunistic backlash the Benghazi incident has brought. His sluggish foreign policy platform, which has kept a lot of ... Bush-era ideologies and practices in place.  Domestic policy - lagging student loan debt reform is the next economic crisis revving up.

Source:

If you expect Obama to make some bold policy statement about climate disruption you should prepared for disappointment ... No, Obama will talk about job creation: green job creation and dirty fossil fuel job creation. I think his domestic issues will focus on the economy, gun control, DOMA and what red states did to limit access to polling places.

Interesting intersection on politics and race here.  It is interesting to note the comments that say that one should focus on the "best" rather than diversity, as if diversity somehow means that sub-standard individuals can only be selected.  It is this type of thought, along with the concept that there is "race-baiting".  While it is clear that a new race theory is being called for in a country fast-moving toward plurality, it seems that a large part of that discussion will involve politics and politicos.  As we re-define hierarchy, the volume around these questions will be raised in politics, enterprise and more.

It has not gone un-noticed that all of President Barack Obama's nominees for cabinet are all white males.  John Kerry for secretary of state, John Brennan for CIA director and Chuck Hagel for secretary of defense. The media, for the time being,  seems to be on Obama's side criticizing those raising concerns over the cabinet's diversity reminding that, for example, Obama's first choice of secretary of state was Susan Price, an African-American and a woman. According to reports, Obama has a better diversity record than his two predecessors and still has more secretaries to appoint to his second-term cabinet. What does the court of public opinion say?

What Others Are Saying...

We should be glad that Obama realizes that ... only the best ... should get those positions. All that affirmative action garbage is good for corporate America and McDonald's. ... We must consider qualifications on this one.

Source:

It's awesome that the party who judges each and every person based on the color of their skin is suddenly having it thrown back in their face. ... Now, it's "ridiculous". If you live by the race baiting sword, you die by the race baiting sword. ...

Source:

... It is reasonable to question why a Cabinet doesn't have more diversity ... Where a white male doesn't seem uniquely qualified, or a woman or minority is at hand and seems to have been passed over ... The irony is that the people who could question this Cabinet are women, racial minorities, and so on. For any conservative ... to raise the question is ludicrous and pathetic ...

Looks like the comment-sphere is either not too dazzled about the Kerry pick or see it more in strategic terms for a GOP senate seat.  Public opinion might not matter much in terms of whether Kerry does or does not grab the Secretary of State seat, but it can indicate a bit more about how the chess board of politics is viewed by the public and where weight may be shifted.  Anyway, wonder if Kerry envisioned this as he sparred with O during debate prep?  Hmmmm...

President Barack Obama nominated Senator John Kerry, who ran for president himself in 2004, for the position of Secretary of State. Kerry is currently the Chair of the Foreign Relations Committee in the Senate. The long-time senator from Massachusetts is Obama's choice after U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Susan Rice withdrew her name from consideration after being criticized for misleading the public regarding the killings of Americans in Libya. It is said that Kerry should have no problem obtaining the post due to his wide experience in building foreign relations. According to reports, he has traveled around the world on behalf of the Obama administration to mend frayed relationships. The comment arena talks back....

What Others Are Saying...

Is the enthusiasm that is present ... in Congress ... about Kerry because if he’s confirmed as SoS, his seat in the Senate will be “getable” by the GOP? Is THAT why Kerry’s being supported? ...

Source:

Why protest John Kerry's appointment? The president gets to pick his secretaries. ... The president will get the credit or blame for Kerry's performance. Hopefully the Republicans can begin their path to victory in 2014 by claiming the seat held by John Kerry. ...

Looks like some Americans just may not want to be talked "at" but rather involved and engaged directly via their ideas.  A tall order given the population, but something will have to give because in this new era (as defined in the book "Rise of the SmartPower Class"), people are committed to becoming more and more self-determinant.  It is not business as usual and even the proposed approach is smacks too much of the business as usual methodology.  People seem to be looking for a radical departure from the old ways that really haven't served many people at all.  This is what is we are calling very leaderful - where everyone wants to participate in creating his/her own lifestyle in the new era.  No doubt, Obama will arrive to cheers in Philly but more than cheers just may be needed here.  Let's watch.

President Barack Obama plans to get the public involved in appealing for a fiscal cliff solution. Obama will be in Philadelphia on Friday where he will explain his strategy for dealing with the issue. Obama making a public case in this manner is seen as a strategy to pressure Republicans to allow tax increases on the wealthy while extending tax cuts for families earning $250,000 or less. The GOP quickly replied criticizing Obama's plan to involve the public by saying that in doing so he avoids to sit and work with the lawmakers. Reaching out to the public has helped Obama before, according to reports. Last summer, the payroll tax cut extension was passed. Also in the same manner, Obama prevented interest rates on millions of federal student loans from doubling. But what's the public chatter this time around?

What Others Are Saying...

That's what Barack does best. Campaign. ... His followers are so gullible they will believe whatever he says ... He and his band of fool Dems have no plan but to tax and spend. The problem is you can't get enough money from this "evil" 2% to pay down the deficit that Barack himself created. ...

Source:

How about listening to the economists who warned against the things that got us into this mess? ... And our representatives need to vote for what's best for We The People ...

Source:

Letting the Bush Tax Cuts expire ... raising the CGT back for everybody ... is a good first step ... Getting the runaway spending ... will be the next step ... Making all Americans pay the same flat-rate Medicare and FICA taxes on all earnings would solve a lot of problems too.

To discuss racial influence in making a decision or not, that is the question.  If one admits race influences choice (as it obviously sometimes does with many based on even the Harvard Google Voter Racism Study of the '08 campaign), one must not say this on television, it seems.  If sociologists and scientists are demonstrating that negative behavior and opinion is based on certain triggers that can be actually seen in the brain as a result of attitudes toward race, is it then possible that it could also influence behavior overall?  This now wades into an arena that is very  deep and early in its research.  But it's definitely a touchy subject because many people like to believe we live in a meritocracy where, because the society was so NOT that initially, that a meritocracy is not quite, quite hard to achieve.  But at least it is being to be discussed. Again, don't believe the hype.  This ain't post-racial  America,  Jack!  Not yet, until we unravel more of sentiment, biology and goals for the future.

Former White House Chief of Staff unsder President George W. Bush said on CNN that part of the reason why former Secretary of State, in the first Bush Administration, endorsed President Barack Obama is because of his race. Sununu also added that he applauded Powell for standing behind someone of his own race. Obama responded to the comment by saying it did not make much sense because American know and respect Powell for his credibility and saying things straight.  So what do Americans have to say about it?

What Others Are Saying...

I lost some respect for Powell. How can you be a Conservative your whole adult life and then all of a sudden vote for a Liberal just because he's black? ... Color should have nothing to do with it. ... He's my guy as long as he's competent.

Source:

... He supports Obama because they are black ... He’s an affirmative action black, that got promoted because of race ... not because of brains or ability.

Source:

So that means that every white person who supported a white candidate is the same! This is crap and needs to stop! ...

"Rolling Stone", "MTV", "Letterman"; Obama is def trying to court that youth vote. But in looking at the below, particulary the last comment; it seems to be about questioning how this approach fits into the new era, what is relevant and what isn't. The past, the present.  It's all being very much examined.  We wonder if policy makers are aware of this, however.  Mind-set is changing, and it's not about running to keep up; but rather to anticipate far enough out that you can walk calmly to it.  That's what we seek to do through out comment analysis for ya.  Keep watching!

President Barack Obama appeared on MTV to answer questions from young voters. For 30 minutes Obama answered questions that were posted on Facebook about same-sex marriage, jobs, and student debt. Obama said he inherited the problem from the Bush administration when the economy was already in a free fall. The president also answered questions about climate change and stressed his support for marriage equality. Obama also stressed on the differences between him and Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney on climate change by saying that Romney has not acknowledged that the problem is man-made, whereas Obama Administration doubled use of renewable energy.

What Others Are Saying...

"Inherited" is what happens when you're sitting at home in Kansas ... your uncle dies and leaves his run down farm to you. What Obama did was beg for the job of President, swearing to us that he was best suited to handle anything that said job entailed.  Then he whined for four years ... He's a fool.

Source:

It's impossible to move the needle much on climate change when half the nation has a "world is flat" mentality. It's why we, as a nation, cannot solve the difficult problems that we face. ... I don't think a real catastrophe caused by a warming earth would even shake these so-called conservatives out of their stupor. ... Climate change deniers are, simply, fools and the country deserves its king of fools - Mr. Romney.

Is MTV even relevant anymore to young people? ... I honestly don't know ... My oldest is 18 and he doesn’t watch.

It's about the documents to some but, seemingly, more about Trump and how this positions him and the Republican candidate even moreso.  Perhaps the most interesting thing about the comment-sphere is that it shows the complete removal of "traditional" media. The announcement was captured via digital video, "announced" via Twitter, and then discussed via digital platforms.  Traditional media is just along for the ride on this one.  Let's continue to track this and see if it actually gains any tractions beyond it's proverbial "15 minutes".

In what was intended as a "major announcement'  today at noonET, Donald Trump said he would give $5 million to any charity President Barack Obama chooses if he releases his college transcripts and passport application. Trump made the announcement through a video posted on Twitter. Trump said he was proud he got the president to release his birth certificate or "whatever it may be." That happened in April 2011 and ever since trump has been calling for Obama to make other records public.  Is the public as interested as The Donald?  Let's find out.

What Others Are Saying...

This risks making Obama look sympathetic. Unless there are allegations of domestic violence ... Trump should ... not risk upsetting the momentum Romney has.

Source:

... The birther stuff is obviously insane, but I don't get the non-release of the college transcripts. I think it's arrogant of the candidates not to openly share all of this information. After all, they are vying for the top job in the world. Why shouldn't there be full due diligence ... Plenty of people in the real working world have had to provide transparency into exactly what they studied and how they did ...

Trump will whore himself for ANY attention he can get. The race is already a circus as it is! … all that fuss and guffaw will drop like his blood pressure after a double-tap shotgun blast to the head. ...

Ouch- looks like the comment soup already has all the ingredients for snarky.  Looks like few believe that Romney is up for the foreign policy challenge and interestingly bring out more personal issues as well (i.e. no military service for the Romney fam). Funny that Romney actually seems to find himself in the place where Obama was last time around regarding international experience.  At any rate, we can already see that people are looking for facts and strategy here - and most concerned about potential war if the right candidate is not leading the country.  Hmmmm....  Anyway, watch parties galore are taking place tonite, but you best believe the digital exchange will the the hottest place.  We can't wait.

President Barack Obama and Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney share a win in the two debates so far. The topic of the last one is foreign policy and it will be held in Lynn University in Boca Raton, Fla. Both Romney and Obama were M-I-A over the weekend preparing for the debate, which both need to win in order to shift the dynamics after the first two in their favor. The Obama campaign is running ads in Florida addressing foreign policy with emphasis on the cost of war and pointing out that Obama ended the war in Iraq and Romney would have kept troops there longer. Libya will certainly be a hot topic especially after the heated discussion in the second debate. The moderator is CBS' newsman Bob Schieffer.  What does the pre-hype comment arena say?

What Others Are Saying...

Romney has foreign policy experience. ... Olympics ... included international athletes. LOL. Not to mention he's insulted nearly every foreign leader and country. His remark about security at the London Olympics was classic ... That kind of stupidity as President would get us all killed.

Source:

I would like to know ... why none of [Romney's] 5 sons or himself ever served in the army/military? He talks a lot about ... patriotism ... but apparently he lives by different standards!

Source:

Republicans count on Americans short memories. Having totally swept G.W. Bush and his disasterous Iraq war under the rug, they are again asking us to trust them with the reins of government ... thinking that Mitt Romney will somehow wave a magic wand ...
