First Woman in 20 Years to Moderate Presidential Debate
Interesting how the media has focused on Crowley's gender, but for the most part, commenters seem basically more into whether or not questions are going to get answered by a strong moderator, period. Could it be this disconnect that the media is exhibiting more and more that is leading to the turning away of traditional media and more toward new media? Could be. One thing is certain, Crowley probably won't be rocking any scrunchies while she fires her questions. Get your popcorn ready.
CNN chief political correspondent and network anchor Candy Crowley will moderate the presidential debate between Barack Obama and Mitt Romney. Crowley will be the first woman in this role since Carole Simpson of ABC News moderated the debate among George H.W. Bush, Bill Clinton and H. Ross Perot in 1992. The other two moderators are PBS’ Jim Lehrer and Bob Schieffer from CBS. The vice presidential debate will be moderated by Martha Raddatz of ABC. What does the comment-sphere have to say about the female inclusion?
What Others Are Saying...
…Crowley was part of a troupe of women reporters who looked for every reason to trash the Clintons. I am glad she is a moderator at least she will ask some tough questions. … Schieffer seems like a fine old gentleman to me but very Texas conservative. ... I sure hope Raddatz bones up on the economy since there will only be one VP debate. … I find Jim Lehrer to be so cynical about how Washington works. … I don’t expect Schieffer to be completely fair. … The women for sure have the most potential to have revealing debates.
Crowley and Bob Schieffer are absolutely terrible choices. A couple of … elite-deferring news readers. ... At least Lehrer is something approaching a journalist. I was hoping for Bill Moyers. … But the candidates would never agree to anyone who's actually going to ask them intelligent questions. …
I hope that Crowley will keep pushing both candidates to answer the questions asked of them ... I also hope that the candidates will be given more questions to answer from viewers. … It would be more interesting if they had several people fact checking the candidates' answers …
