where the SmartPower generation connects

Obama

Naturally, this is a big topic.  The comment arena has more than its fair share of sentiment against the president and even the "system" overall, while of course supporters of his abound.  But maybe this is about something much deeper.  Not only is this about divisiveness, but also a growing interest in our culture regarding transparency, trust and privacy.  These are three words that you must keep at the forefront during this SmartPower era.  While they are held in such key importance, any slight against them is magnified in an exponential manner and then the subject of great debate.  It's been said that the need for transparency will become so great in society that you better even be wearing clean underwear.  Not sure if things will go that far, but let's just say that those Pinocchio's at WashPo probably won't be retiring any time soon.  Yikes! (what's more, this is happening on an international level and citizens of all countries are exchanging values and becoming more empowered over discussions via digital platforms)

It's all about scandal, and we don't mean the series on ABC television.  Much going on in the comment arena regarding breaking stories this week. As if the Benghazi probe weren't enough, the country has found out that not only has the Internal Revenue Service allegedly improperly targeted conservative groups but also that the Justice Department reportedly collected phone records of reporters from the Associated Press.  Talk about "big government."  Now people are pondering how this will affect President Obama's legacy. IRS, FBI, DOJ, AP - it's all being called Alphabet Soup.  But the real story is in what constituents think.  Let's jump to the comment arena and do our own investigation....

Very interesting here in the comment-sphere.  While many are certainly taking the holier-than-thou approach this morning, there are many who see it like our Commenter #3 here.  Why?  Does this speak further to value change in our society.  Interestingly enough, certain surveys showed that some female voters forgave Sanford because the situation with the mistress seemed to be genuine love.  As they say, art imitates life, and what other polls are also showing is that female viewers are rooting for the fictional couple on the ABC hit series "Scandal" that depicts POTUS having an affair with a woman he truly loves.  As we observe the beginnings of a gender shift in power in the U.S. that seems to be coinciding with re-evaluation of traditional relationships, we see a new attitude.  While the national press corp may have been shocked about the win, many of us who observe the cultural scene are not quite in that same situation today.  It's about being able to connect the dots to indicate not only what could take place, but mindset behind why it is taking place.  Keep reading and watching us!

What's the hot political chatter of the moment?  Well, aside from the Benghazi hearings today, it's all about Republican Mark Sanford's win of a South Carolina congressional seat just last night.  Though caught up in a previous scandal regarding extra-marital romance and more, Sanford surpised many and appeared like a phoenix from the ashes and claiming victory.  It is said that the national press corp is shocked, but the real news in in the public opinion. Let's get a glimpse....

What might be most interesting not only about McConnell's response but opinion either way to it is that, for the most part, there is a humanizing factor here to all of this which seems often lost in the political sparring of day-to-day.  No longer do politicos utilize established media to make a point, but they are becoming quite adept at using a sole image directly to the public while making a point to/challenging their fellow public servant.  This dynamic then provides a place for people to express and examine values, sentiment rather than watch the same talking heads on the news do so.  Humor makes it even hotter because it allows us to say what we want without having to be held so accountable for it.  Watch for this intersection to occur in more interesting ways as we move deeper into the SmartPower era.  Some have said that the meme will be the main source of such statement and rebuttal for 2016, but we're not so sure about that.  3 years is a long time in the digi world.  But what we do know is that those who use what is created in witty ways will be who gets the public opinion vote.  Now, if only politicos actually responded to those who Tweet at them more often, huh?

Discussion still continues regarding various aspects of the White House Correspondents Dinner.  Who can match whom in zingers has become one of the best parts of the WHCD event.  As many know,  President Obama made a comment abut his recent outreach to congressional Republicans. The joke consisted of him saying he did not want to drink with a Kentucky lawmaker. “Some folks still don’t think I spend enough time with Congress,” Obama said at the Dinner. “‘Why don’t you get a drink with Mitch McConnell?’ they ask. ‘Really? Why don’t you get a drink with Mitch McConnell.’” Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell made his own response to the joke by tweeting a photo of himself drinking beer at a bar by himself. He sits next to an empty chair where a glass of red wine is place on the bar. The joke was referencing Clint Eastwood who gave a prime-time speech during the 2012 Republican convention with an empy chair representing Obama.  Let's see how the Twitter response fared in the political world.

Who says old Mitch doesn't have a sense of humor? Sadly Obama has more than an empty chair, empty heart too. Infanticide is alright as long as the heartless women keep voting for him and the democrats...

Not surprisingly the comment-sphere is not siding with either party on this issue and questioning those who are running the show more and more frequently.  In an era where flux is the new norm, hi-jacks and hoaxes are part of everyday news; watch for great questioning and concern to arise.  Instability seems to rule now, and as the individual is able to share his/her voice in a greater manner thanks to digital platforms, we could be in for an even more bumpy ride than anything the FAA has encountered in the skies!

Money is always a topic around which the comment-sphere can easily gather.  So, the House just passed a bill to ease air-travel delays caused by the furlough of air-traffic controllers, resolving an issue that had re-ignited debate over federal spending cuts that took effect earlier this year. The bill passed the House on a 361-41 vote. The Senate legislation would give the Transportation Department, budget flexibility to reduce the number of air-traffic controller furloughs, which had caused this week's flight delays. Under the bill, the FAA would be able to redirect as much as $253 million from other areas of its budget to support staffing and operations. President Barack Obama has yet to sign the bill. While the legislators likely improved their chances for on-time flights when they return to work next month, cuts that are harming care for cancer patients, closing children out of preschool and ending food programs for the elderly seem to remain firmly in place. In passing the bill, many Republicans blamed the Obama administration while Democrats argued that the FAA debacle was another reason to replace the sequester. "We're all in this together or we're not," said Republican Peter Welch. "This picking and choosing where the winners continue to be the haves and the losers tend to be the have-nots -- it's just a spiral down, and it's a sad day in Congress that instead of attacking the real problem that we created, we carve out an exception that's going to benefit members of Congress themselves."  Normal staffing returns Sunday. As a frequently flier I feel qualified telling Congress they are a bunch of saps!  The whole point of the sequester is to cause enough pain to force each side to negotiate.  This was not a negotiation.  It was a capitulation. They circumvent the whole process because they can't do what they were elected to do... Today they re-fund the FAA.  Which group gets their money back next week? ...

We took a little while to go through the comment arena on this one to get a pretty solid handle.  It is interesting that what is being filed under political news is actually creating more of a stir in the digital public arena due to what is perceived as classism more than about insensitivity to the political situation, unfortunately. And the comments are still pouring in on this story!  We think it's because this is such hot intersection of celebrity, class and politics - an area that you don't want to fool around with in the SmartPower era.  Celebrity is already undergoing re-evaluation, as the rise of the individual spans its wings more and more and decides who, if anyone, to put on a pedestal.  Add to that of mix of celebrity privilege/wealth and class mixed with politics (authority to which many have lost faith/turning away), and it's a pretty strong cocktail.  Most do not think Jay-Z and Beyonce will be fined/punished formally in any way, much like many in our society who reach a certain level.  However, there is not much thought about the slow leak of social capital of these two, which seems to be more apparent every week.  Equally of note, we watch politicos scramble to use the situation to try to gain social capital.  What do we see from the comment arena?  Neither moves are really being respected. And that says so very much.  Whew, after all that, mojito anyone?

Gun control is certainly being discussed in the comments-sphere, but surely, this is racking up as many if not more comments! Beyoncé and Jay-Z celebrated their fifth wedding anniversary in Havana, Cuba last week.  But now it's become a government issue.  It seems that by making this trip, the two notables have put themselves and the Obama administration under scrutiny for approving the trip; and it seems Republicans are having a field day with this one.  “U.S. law clearly bans tourism to Cuba by American citizens because it provides money to a cruel, repressive and murderous regime,” Florida Senator Marco Rubio said. “Since their inception, the Obama administration’s ‘people to people’ cultural exchange programs have been abused by tourists who have no interest in the Cuban people’s freedom and either don’t realize or don’t care that they’re essentially funding the regime’s systematic trampling of people’s human rights.” Florida Representatives Ileana Ros-Lehtinen and Mario Diaz-Balart sent a letter to the Treasury Department requesting more information about the trip. A US trade embargo against Cuba prevents American tourists from visiting the island. President Barack Obama’s administration has loosened restrictions, allowing travel for academic, religious, and cultural programs. Florida’s Congressional delegation insists that that Beyoncé and Jay-Z’s trip to Cuba does not meet any of these standards. “We’re saying that no one is above the law, even if you are the diva Beyoncé, and that’s wonderful that she’s famous and rich, and Jay-Z, everybody loves him, too,” Ros-Lehtinen said. “Terrific. But no one’s above the law.”  Let's see if politicos agree.

What Others Are Saying...

Besides being rich celebrities, they have friends in high places. .. I'm sure they feel bulletproof. This country may not have an official class system... but we've got a cultural class system where the rich and famous are treated and thought of preferentially. I doubt they'll even be fined.

Here's the thing:  during this time of social shift, transparency and qualification is key to society that is basically living through a trust deficit.  This is why we see the backlash from the comment arena.  Is it that politicos don't see the move toward such values or don't care?  Hmmmm....Another small chip away at respect and trust in politicos when these things happen?  How will the chips line up?  We'll really just have to watch and see.  In the meantime, koninchwa, y'all!

Something new in political news this week in the media.  Caroline Kennedy seems to be heading to Tokyo to be the next U.S. ambassador to Japan. Kennedy, whose support for President Obama during his 2008 campaign was seen as crucial, had been widely talked about as a candidate for the diplomatic post, but now it seems that all is close to being offical.  It won't be the first time that Obama has rewarded a prominent political supporter with a prestigious position.  However, media reports have said that Kennedy's thin resume and the importance of Japan make it a particularly crucial example of this practice. It is said that she is not an expert on Japan nor international relations nor has she ever held public office. Kennedy doesn't even know how to speak Japanese.  It is reported that Japan is in favor of having an American ambassador of celebrated status. Kennedy’s predecessors include legendary Senate majority leader Mike Mansfield, former vice president Walter Mondale, former House speaker Tom Foley, and former Senate majority leader Howard Baker, all well-known politicans.  So, politicos and others think what?

Well, looks like those commenting are definitely on board.  This seems to reflect the SmartPower interest in self-definition.  In order to do that, it helps if one can understand him/herself better, particularly the brain. What will be interesting to see is what hot sidebar to the main focus.  Things like brain-food just may begin to take on an entirely new meaning... But this is not the full story.  Seems that brain-mapping as it intersects criminal cases can make for major controversy.  As we become more and more advanced in our tech capabilities, we will also be charged with that of common sense maintaining the same pace.  Think we can do it?

The buzz in political news is very cerebral today, to say the least.  President Obama has announced that federal agencies plan to spend $100 million to jump start an effort to map the human brain. Experts say that the research could lead to breakthroughs in the treatment and prevention of brain disorders like Alzheimer's, schizophrenia and Parkinson's disease. Successful government research has lead to the development of computer chips, global positioning technology, the Internet and other technologies. The Brain Research through Advancing Innovative Neurotechnologies (BRAIN) Initiative is now called "the next great American project"  by Obama. The 2014 research budget will include around $100 million of research done by the National Institutes of Health, the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency, and the National Science Foundation. Let's see what constituents think of the project.

What Others Are Saying...

Aside from Alzheimer’s and other diseases we may actually find out if we have free will, what is consciousness, what is the difference between brain and mind and where does self sit.

Source:

As someone in the neuroscience and public health fields, I can say that this is one of the single most important steps towards ensuring that the US stays competitive in a global race towards scientific advancement and the development of new therapies. This is as essential as mapping the human genome, a project which many laughed at when it was first conceived. Never the less, this initiative is vital and timed well to combat the problems we face with rising rates of neurological disorders. Those who oppose this research often do so for political reasons, but honestly...

The CIA and NSA and now, apparently DARPA, have been experimenting with precognition, telepathy and remote viewing now for years... Brain mapping is just another insight into how these things can be made to work successfully.

Zuck doesn't seem to be getting much luv with all this movement.  He is certainly eyed with suspicion or renewed malice. But here is what this whole situation does: bring up major digital discussion around training, values around economy, inclusion, diversity that probably should have been had long ago and very seriously as we enter deeper into this new era.  Watch for the volume to become much louder on this in the coming weeks!  In the meantime, don't think FB will be getting very many "likes" on this move.

In looking back at the week in political news, one of the most talked about pieces was about Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg making the jump from tech to get deeper into politics by greating a political action committee, hiring lobbying firms in Washington, D.C.  and taking a stance on immigration policy.  Many are asking why. Indeed, Facebook announced recently that it would be opening up new temporary developer offices in Vancouver until it can figure out how to transfer engineers to one of several offices inside the United States. Because of its proximity to Seattle, one of the social networking company’s offices, Vancouver could become home to highly-skilled workers who could help make Facebook stronger, but due to US immigration policy, this plan stays in the wings. In his letter earlier this month, Zuckerberg sent a letter signed by not only himself, but representatives from The Internet Association, TechAmerica, National Venture Capital Association, the Consumer Electronics Association, and others, to Obama and leaders of both houses of Congress. Many question Zuckerberg's motives.  To the comment-sphere to get a good read on public sentiment over media sentiment!

With all that money he saved on Facebook's zero taxes, he can afford to buy influence!.. Crony capitalism! Sweet deal if you can get it!

... I believe this speaks to the nature of the issue in the United States with Immigration. On one side we have the technology companies seeking skilled workers, on the other we have conservatives defending the rights of Americans to take those jobs. Perhaps we could agree on training?

Is it just us or are people seemingly saying that the issue is a bit deeper than the government just putting laws around the parameters of gun sales? In the SmartPower era not only is authority definitely not trusted but there is also greater interest at more effective and thorough problem-solving. The issues around gun-control particularly demonstrate this mind-set.  We'll be continuing to track this in the weeks ahead!

In domestic political news, seems the media can't take their eyes off the gun-control battle.  In his weekly radio address, President Obama discussed his plans for gun control. The Commander-In-Chief has been in talks with the Senate to come to a conclusion about new laws. The NRA has been pushing back against stricter gun laws against multiple states. Senate leader Harry Reid has been reportedly giving President Obama an extremely hard time in coming to a conclusion about gun laws especially on the heels of the Sandy Hook and Aurora incidences. Meanwhile, New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg is creating a $12 million ad spend regarding gun control.  Let's see what the read is from consistuents....

From the comment sphere, we see the people clearly kicking this one back to the top.  In the SmartPower era, people are very vocal about a number of things - particularly spending and ensuring that those doing the talking about cuts are actually cutting their personal budgets first.  People do not seem to be willing to be inconvenienced as easily as before.  We see this as well with the Yahoo! ban on telecommuting while its CEO has a nursery built to suit her needs.  In a "bottom up" era, it may pay to be sensitive to these shifts and changes in tide, lest one could find him/herself on the rough end of them.  In the meantime, shame Hollywood-Tech can't come up with a virtual offering/experience to help out in White House interest, no?

Among the latest political squables being reported? The White House has announced that all self-guided tours of the "people's house" have been cancelled until further notice due to budget cuts as a result of the sequestration. Given the fact that the White House is a publicly funded building, a new round of mocking has be administered towards President Obama. In his defense Obama says that this situation is not his fault. It is said that once the Secret Service had reportedly pulled some staff from the tours, the White House responded by closing the tours completely.  Seems the issue comes down to saving on the overtime costs that this tour scenario apparently creates. Obama has said, "...to make sure that we've got White House tours that means that you got a whole bunch of families who are depending on a paycheck who suddenly are seeing a five percent or 10 percent reduction in their pay," Obama said. Let's see if the public is buying it.

What Others Are Saying...

... Obama always talks like he and his Administration are two different people. One does not agree with the other. Its never his fault =96 its his Administrations fault. He was asleep at the time, or playing golf, or taking a vacation...

Or take the $5 million dollars in the bet from Donald Trump and just open up is Harvard records?...
