Lochte's Sister Apologizes for Racism Comments

Sat, 08/25/2012 - 10:26pm

When looking at race in this country, there always seem to be two sides: those who want to dismiss it immediately as nothing and those who want to dissect it.  In an age which seems to be hyper-sensitive to race, the point seems to be missed very often that the more we separate ourselves from others, the less opportunity we have for expansion, cohesion and harmony.  Studies in sociology are demonstrating more and more that people seem to be embedded subconsciously with certain beliefs (i.e that racism does not exist, all of one racial group is inadequate, etc).  Until we probably address the root of such messages, rather than one who expresses such messages, we will continue to have these discussions.

Eleven-time gold medal Olympic swimmer Ryan Lochte's sister Megan Jean Lochte Torrini just recently issued an apology for calling Chinese people "chinks" after visiting Beijing during the 2008 Olympics. The video is from four years ago when she was a guest in a night comedy talk show but it went viral just recently. In her statement, Torrini says the interview was a skit and it did not reflect her personality. Ryan Lochte has not commented on the controversy, but naturally, others have.
