Skin color mixed with religious practice can be a perfectly lethal cocktail for some people.  Dr. Jennifer Richeson at Northwestern University  is acutally studying manifestations of racial bias in mind, brain and behavior.  For example, Richeson's tests indicate that everyone has measurable, often unconscious, preferences for some people over others. Indeed, a computer-based procedure called the Implicit Association Test, or IAT, measures the fraction-of-a-second differences in how quickly people even associate certain stereotypically Caucasian names (such as "Chip") with positive words like "heaven" versus how quickly they associate other names (such as "Jamaal") with the same words. You can guess which one gets the faster response.  However, while much of this research seems to show that the responses are subconscious, the comments below seem to indicate a higher level of awarenss of perception, but this could only be given the additional time alloted to reflect.  Either way, race continues to be a hot-button in our country and one which we must continue to examine. Our thoughts are with the victims and their families.

40-year-old Wade Michael Page was killed by police at the end of a recent rampage at a Sikh Temple in Wisconsin. Page had tattoos of the Celtic cross adopted by white supremacist groups, Page had also been the front man for a white-power rock band called "End Apathy" for several years. Page moved from Colorado to Milwaukee where he enlisted in the Army in 1992. He started a band in North Carolina, later moved back to the Milwaukee area, where he had been a short time before the shootings. A friend said Page was pushed out of the military for showing up to formation drunk. Same friend said Page was involved with white supremacy, and it is rumored that Page wanted to start a holy race war. FBI has yet not confirmed involvement with the white supremacist movement. Let's go to the comments

What Others Are Saying...

Unfortunately, Sikh’s are targeted because of their skin color, and the clothes they wear-even more than Muslims. … There have been many Sikh targeted attacks, as well as Temple damage ... shortly after 9/11. … People don’t realize that this is a completely different religion -- a mostly peaceful religion, but which has stood up to protect Hinduism from Islam many times.

… Since 9/11 we have been constantly at war with Middle Eastern nations  and the government spews out press releases about … how many terrorist attacks they are preventing. … The issue is our military invasions, interventions, bombing death and destruction in the Middle East. The Muslim hate crime is fallout from that, and while deplorable could be worse. …

We should send every white supremacist to Gitmo or other detention facilities. ... We should do the same to anyone ... they are connected with in any way. It's the only way to be sure that these terrorist vermin stay contained.
