Naturally, this is a big topic.  The comment arena has more than its fair share of sentiment against the president and even the "system" overall, while of course supporters of his abound.  But maybe this is about something much deeper.  Not only is this about divisiveness, but also a growing interest in our culture regarding transparency, trust and privacy.  These are three words that you must keep at the forefront during this SmartPower era.  While they are held in such key importance, any slight against them is magnified in an exponential manner and then the subject of great debate.  It's been said that the need for transparency will become so great in society that you better even be wearing clean underwear.  Not sure if things will go that far, but let's just say that those Pinocchio's at WashPo probably won't be retiring any time soon.  Yikes! (what's more, this is happening on an international level and citizens of all countries are exchanging values and becoming more empowered over discussions via digital platforms)

It's all about scandal, and we don't mean the series on ABC television.  Much going on in the comment arena regarding breaking stories this week. As if the Benghazi probe weren't enough, the country has found out that not only has the Internal Revenue Service allegedly improperly targeted conservative groups but also that the Justice Department reportedly collected phone records of reporters from the Associated Press.  Talk about "big government."  Now people are pondering how this will affect President Obama's legacy. IRS, FBI, DOJ, AP - it's all being called Alphabet Soup.  But the real story is in what constituents think.  Let's jump to the comment arena and do our own investigation....

The only people that will defend Obama are Blacks... Obama is weak and one of his character flaws is that he can't deal with any criticism and sees anyone as an ENEMY that criticizes him.....

Russian court found three members of Russian female punk rock band Pussy Riot guilty of hooliganism after they sang an anti-Putin song. The women will spend three years in prison for insulting the Russian Orthodox Church and undermining public order. Celebrities have spoken in the band’s defense. Madonna performed in a Pussy Riot-style and said she was praying for them because everyone has a right to free speech. Other celebrities Paul McCartney, Sting, Bryan Adams, Moby, the Beastie Boys, Peter Gabriel, Bjork and Carrie Brownstein have also shown support for Pussy Riot. Anthony Kiedis from The Red Hot Chili Peppers wore a Pussy Riot T-shirt. Sting said in a statement on his website that he found it “appalling.” Alex Kaparanos from Franz Ferdinand called Putin the worst kind of hypocrite.

What Others Are Saying...

… Pussy Riot danced around in their bras and masks in a church. They weren't using their freedom of speech; they were disrespectful to all Christians in Russia. If they wanted to speak out against Putin, they could have done so on a public square. ... With these celebrities showing their support to the wrong people, the members of the Pussy Riot were smirking throughout their whole trial and verdict. They deserved the two year sentence. ...

Source:

… You cannot disagree that Madonna knows how to work the media … She is using her ability to do so to bring attention to something that we would have been unlikely to hear of … we in the UK take for granted - freedom of speech.

Source:

… I don't think Putin or the Russian public care about what Madonna has to say. … Canada and USA & other western nations are the only countries where we have free speech to a certain level. …

In that screams cult of celebrity, this divorce news is all over the media.  Interesting thing is that most who have commented do not seemed to be that surprised at all and using the comment-sphere to express themselves.  Perception is reality, and perhaps since it has always been largely perceived that this marriage was a bit off, people are not seemingly too shocked no matter whether a straight news outlet or celebrity/entertainment outlet.  In fact, the media is more speculative about what caused the break-up (scientology?) than the public. They are onto the next thing already demonstrating that Hollywood can barely keep up with the new leaderful public. Oh hey, but who gets the house in Telluride in the split?! That's what we wanna know.

Actors Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes are reportedly divorcing, as per media news outlets across the country. Cruise and Holmes were married in an Italian castle in November 2006. The ceremony was attended by some of the most famous Hollywood. The "Rock of Ages" star, 49, and Holmes, 33, have one daughter, 6-year-old Suri. Holmes wants full custody of  her. Judging from the comments, seems people thought it was an inevitable flow of events.

What Others Are Saying...

… He seems like he might be a very hard husband to please. … It took her 5 years of marriage to realize how nuts he was? … Sad for them. I thought it was odd though that were never together. Guess we all saw it coming. … It was only a matter of time. He completely changed after he got the ring on her finger.

Source:

Tom Cruise is too stuck on himself. Kate was never really happy in the first beginning of their marriage. You could tell that she wanted to get out of that crazy marriage. … No surprise at all, just sorry it took her so long to dump him. She was nothing but arm candy for him. … I think it is sad anytime anyone divorces esp celebrities living in the public eye. They were a cute couple. Everyone is judging but no one really knows what they did or did not enjoy. … In my eyes they should have never ever gotten married and thought it wouldn't last as long as it did.

Source:

I always thought Katie had to wake up eventually. … This was a business arrangement, not a marriage. They’re ending it right on schedule. … Another long (in modern terms), national nightmare is over. … I hope Tom honors the severance pay package. She's earned every penny of it. … He's kinda bat-guano crazy, but she seemed to be a leveling force. … I never really thought this marriage was real, or that it will last, although there is absolutely no doubt that Suri is their joint biological child.

Do the comments show that the public is simply over celebs-behaving-badly, particularly when there is so much more at stake in today's challenging times?  Perhaps.  What is curious, however, is how race - subtly or overtly - seems to come into play into not just the highlighted comments we found below but through the many that we did not post.  Different standards?  Heightened racial times?  One could speculate in many ways.  But the real statistic that we'd like to know is how many meals could have been bought for the homeless based on the amount of Ace of Spades premium champagne bottles that were hurled and wasted?  Yikes!

Despite sources denying that the fight was not over the men’s mutual romantic history with Rihanna, rappers Drake and Chris Brown had a melee in which Brown was hurt, and later reportedly consoled by his former girlfriend Rihanna. Not only were bottle thrown and noses bloodied at the just recently shutdown club W.i.P in Manhattan's hip SoHo neighborhood, but many innocent bystanders were hurt. Let’s examine what commentators are saying regarding celebrity behavior, as such.

What Others Are Saying...

...Wakeup call for his once-battered girlfriend, Rihanna, who is getting back with him. The young-bloods need to be horse whipped into behaving like civilized boy-men.

...two talented young men who really need to squash the beef. They should be more considerate of the young kids who idol both of them. We pay to hear good music, not about beefing …they should be working together getting more money rather than fighting each other.

Rihanna has been everywhere…she makes all black women look bad. Hell she makes Kim Kardashian look like a saint

We've said it before, and we'll say it again.  We are not in a post-racial society but rather, one that is in the midst of examining what race relations mean in a new era of defining relationships, overall. Talk about trying to re-brand!  Look for this one to not be settled any time soon.

News coverage abounds regarding the fact that the KKK wants to adopt a one-mile stretch of highway on Route 515 in Georgia.  Civil Rights organizations have asked the Department of Transportation in that state to deny the KKK's application. Experts and public, alike, ponder if that is legal and what impact the action would have.

What Others Are Saying...

“I love my race. Does that make me wrong? I’m proud to be white,”... That's fine. However, it's disingenuous to suggest that you can express that love and pride by appropriating and attempting to redefine the brand "KKK" - that organization was founded to terrorize, discriminate against, dehumanize and murder human beings...

Source:

now we should all be trying to get the new black panthers to adopt 2 miles, then the kkk will have to adopt 3, and so on. In about 2 years time we will have successfully harnessed racial bigotry to eliminate litter on our roads...

Source:

of course they won't be out there in robes, during the day that is, once they adopt the highway i can just picture them invoking all kinds of alledged rights...This just got interesting.

Some celebrities just can't seem to stay out of news due to gaffes. Kutcher seems to be one of them.  But in an era where everything is being questioned, where do people draw the line and good-humored celeb role playing and something which is deliberately offensive? To note: concerns by just a few well-placed people are major kryptonite to brands and just shows the growing power of the comment of the people over the "strength" of celebrity.

Ashton Kutcher is the latest celebrity hit with scores of media coverage regarding an advertisement for Popchips where he dons brown face and perceived racial fun-poking at Bollywood and Indian. The ad is removed.

What Others Are Saying...

Are you kidding me? Seriously? So when Raj from Big Bang Theory makes stereotype statements, where's your outrage?...

Source:

Oh for crying out loud. Where has America's sense of humor gone? Anyone ever hear of Don Rickles?...

Source:

I thought it was funny but … the reason people of color are so offended over this types of stunts (by white men and actors) is because of the repeated abuse back in the day and even today that comes from the racist white people. I don't think non white people will ever understand the hurt they have inflected on other races...

Funny how almost all comments unanimously reflect the same sentiment.  In a time where self-determination is a particular focus, the trend in thought seems to be that every person is truly responsible for his/her own actions. This is the vibe of today.

Media prepares for Bobby Brown's first interview since Whitney Houston's Death.  The "Today Show" snags an exclusive, and leaks a sentence or two to lure interest for the upcoming Wednedsay and Thursday interview. Brown says finger-pointing should not include him.

What Others Are Saying...

Whitney was a straight-up Newark crack sista. Why should BB be blamed for her drug addiction? No one forces anyone to take drugs. We all know the dangers. It's drilled into our heads from childhood. Why can't people accept the fact that this woman, with an angelic voice (20 years ago), was her own worst enemy?...

Source:

Don't get me wrong I loved Whitney Houston... As did many people. But I sure do not blame Bobby Brown for her death, He did not force her to do the drugs or continue to do the drugs after they broke up...

Source:

I believe him..no one can MAKE an adult do anything they don't choose to do (barring physical force) I think Whitney just had a wild streak...
