Privacy, privacy, privacy. We've said it before, and we'll say it again: privacy and its parameters will continue to become one of the most debated issues of our time.  Certainly most all the comments are a thumbs down on this one, though few are surprised. What might be most interesting is not what is said here, though, but maybe what is being thought.  How long before more devices are made that assure scrambling of information -whether on the black market or above board.  Hmmmm.....     Can you hear me now?

The media is abuzz with news regarding the fact that personal data has apparently been collected on Verizon customers by our National Security Agency as a result of a "top secret order."  All in the name of monitoring behavior that could lead to terrorism, the government has apparently been doing more than its fair share of ear-hustling.  To make matters worse, the White House initially declined to comment but now defends the activities outlined in the report from The Guardian. Yikes.  The reverberation continues through the comment arena even though the news broke the other day.  To the digital public sphere!

Just Verizon? Who wants to bet on that?

IMO, the word privacy vary in meaning depending on circumstances and time. That right has been treaded upon by government local, state and federal), private and public entities long before this revelation. Do I like it? No, but I am a realist and know this is a product of our society...

What might be most interesting about all of this is that we may not have ever even heard much about it had not the customer decided, in true SmartPower form, to post the message from the delivery guys on line, thus becoming his own media outlet and reporter, no need to call CNN.  While many of the comments show that people are disgusted by the behavior, they are not surprised; and this says a lot about the state of our society today. (this also shows corporate America once again who is in control - the wronged or vocal consumer can now take a brand down in just seconds via digital platforms.)  Incidents like these do, however, provide an opportunity to discuss what so many throughout the comment arena have said, and that is that this sentiment persists and it's more about getting to the root of the sentiment rather than the mere incident itself.  Let's watch and see who might develop a seamless manner in which to do something like that in the near future.  In the meantime, wonder if Pizza Hut's stock will go up for a minute after this :-)

Yikes!  People have barely finished checking all their voicemail messages after the long holiday weekend, when already there is drama.  Seems like a lot of the comment arena is exchanging thought about a little incident that recently took place involving a couple of pizza delivery guys from Papa Johns.  Seems the employees thought a tip they received was too low.  What's the best thing to do in a situation like that?  Well, leave a long voicemail message for the customer, calling him the "n" word and everything else.  Yes, you read right.  This cause the CEO of Papa John's to post an apology on the company's Facebook page.  Yikes.  Let's get a quick peek at some of the sound off....

One of the interesting things that came up as we researched this was that across sites that might be considered more conservative, the commenters wondered whether the IQ stats were actually accurate or not, and if people were angry because of what the stats revealed or if the stats were actually wrong. Hmmmm.... Either way, this whole incident brings up another huge opportunity to discuss the race model in this country, and why it seems in the best interest of some to encourage barriers between humans based on skin color.  Is the best to silence someone who releases such a support or to almost force him to go on a tour in order to be able to hold town halls and interact with everyday Americans as they talk back to and contemplate the "report" with him.  For we all know these IQ tests are skewed by those who create them, but this is cearly about more than intelligence or lack of it.  This entire incident further demonstrates that we are in no way in a post-racial America and that fear abounds as the new America begins to take shape and form.  This is really about a shift in power dynamic and response to that.  Watch closely and see how race is used as the substitute for someting which runs much deeper....

The comment-sphere is a buzz with the latest reports on a move that seems to pit one ethnic demo against another.  The conservative think tank The Heritage Group is finding itself the subject of media coverage after one of its analysts released a study on immigration that actually included information that said that not only do immigrants possess a lower IQ but that the cost in welfare benefits would soar.  The incident has brought criticism from both Democrats and Republicans, and just a few hours ago has led to the resignation of Jason Richwine, co-author of the study.  But to get the real sentiment, let's head to the digital town hall.

Racism is endemic in our history, our society, and our culture. We will never eradicate racial bias in our generation. The best we can do is to recognize it and do our best to break the stereotypes.  Any analysis of immigration policy will be under the shadow of racism...

Slippery slope for Rihanna, huh?  In the SmartPower era where individuals are taking more control than ever, under-estimating both their needs and power is dangerous.  This is particularly true for the realm of celebrity, that we have said repeatedly here, is undergoing re-evaluation.  The celebrities still seem to be missing the shift and behaving as if it's business as usual.  Let's see if and how consumers truly begin to talk back to events such as this with swift and immediate reaction by not only by-passing purchases but creating crowd-gathered demands directed to artists when they behave in such a manner.  We've all had break-ups before and been through off by them,  RiRi, but one can't just show up 3 hours late for work and not expect anyone to notice....

Fans bite back today regarding Rihanna.  As everyone knows, the sexy pop singer is on tour, but encountering yet more problems. The entourage was set to hit Boston but showed up three hours late.  it is reported that the singer offered no excuse and even put on a poor show.  Fans were truly not having it and began booing.  Jump down to check out some of the comments from the digital sphere on this one!

I have seen a multitude of articles along the same vein...Rhianna making people wait for hours to see her in concert, at a showing, etc, blah blah. If those people are so angered by her disrespect, why don't they show it where it counts? Her wallet.

You've gotta give it to "The Daily Beast."  They really come up with some amazing things that they think categorize as news and/or thought-pieces.  But as long as they're going to write about this kind of thing, and there is response; naturally, we're gonna analyze opinion around it.  Now, besides the fact that many people clearly state that they have no problem being considered racist if that's what it takes to allow their belief that somehow Jay-Z (and wife) are part of something a bit sinister.  But beyond this, it opens up an important discussion regarding not just extreme wealth and how rare it is among African-Americans, but the shift toward social responsibility around that wealth (lest some be seen as actually something against good/God by exhibiting a lack of it).  The writer is berated  by commenters throughout sites for making the connection that conjecture about Jay-Z being involved in something supernatural is akin to racism. She is seen as "missing the point" by stretching and including a racial element when those of the same race as the recording artist are actually those who initiated the illuminati claims.  Worth noting is also the tone of exhaustion from commenters about the term racism being so easily thrown about without any deep dialogue and new elements.  Many sociologists are coming together more and more to say that we need a new race theory.  And, how!  In the meantime, think Jay loses any sleep at night over such accusations?  And what was Samuels' inspiration for writing such a piece, anyway?  Hmmmm.....

Media is buzzin' today about a piece in The Daily Beast that was written by Allison Samuels. Seems that Samuels thinks that accusations of Jay-Z being a member of the Illuminati is simply a racist move; a way to discount his meteoric rise and hold onto success.  The video "report" (on BeastTV) has gotten a lot of play and discusses secret society symbols and the like.  This might be a first, however, that Illuminati accusations are connected to racism. Let's see what commenters think.

So, we said that there would be more and more of a celeb re-evaluation (see past posts in the celebrity category); and it is further unfolding before our very eyes.  Celebrity plus transparency equals an uneasy mix, as we see.  But for those who want to maintain relevance in the new SmartPower era, it will be essential.  Even for Beyonce, effects of the trust-deficit are more and more apparent.  It is clear, though, that she was not prepared for this not being cognizant of social change.  For celeb brands and corporate brands, that is the danger now, isn't it?  The test will take place as comments are made during the actual performance during Superbowl.  We can't wait to track it for ya, and give you our analysis.  Stay tuned!!

Beyoncé Knowles held a press conference in New Orleans this week where she talked about her highly anticipated Super Bowl half-time performance. Beyoncé walked onto the  stage and asked the audience to rise, giving a LIVE acapella performance of the National Anthem. Following her performance Beyoncé was questioned abouther performance at the Presidential Inauguration. “I am a perfectionist ... I did not have time to rehearse with the orchestra, it was a live television show," Knowles explained. "Due to the weather, due to the delay, due to no proper sound check I did not feel comfortable taking the risk." She continued to explain that she was too busy rehearsing for the Super Bowl to practice for the inauguration and "it was always the plan" to sing with a back track. Beyoncé was then asked if she planned to sing live on Sunday or sing with a pre-recorded track like Madonna did last year.  Beyoncé responded “I am well rehearsed and I will absolutely be singing live... ." Hmmmm...let's see if the fans believe it.

What Others Are Saying...

... The fact is Beyonce, there is no performance if you didn't actually perform, and make all the excuses you want about the cold weather and the delay and the sound check. The fact is, she showed up with a pre-recorded track. She didn't record it real quick when she found out the situation. It was finished, auto-tuned, and ready to go when she arrived which, to me, says that she NEVER had any intention of singing live. Kelly Clarkson ... sang live, and she knocked it out of the park. Why couldn't Beyonce?

Source:

...This sounds horrible. No wonder she had to pre-record it.

Source:

Why is she lying about always singing live? Her track skipped at the Europe Music Awards 03. She never sung live at the VMAs. She lipped "At Last" at the President's last inauguration. Like get real woman. She is a liar. She lied about her pregnancy. She is so consumed with being perfect that there is nothing real about this woman...

Here it seems we see yet more of this turning of the tide of celebrity worship.  The comment-arena, in many cases, seems to be pushing back against the mix of notable spheres and seems to question the value of spending time discussing the arrivals and participations of celebrities during a political event such as the inauguration.  Given the patriotic tone of the day, should not these patriots be included?  What we will start to see is a greater call from society for greater social responsibility and action, not just at election time, from celebs who have a large soapbox and deep pockets from which to access if they want to be taken seriously in the new era.  Thing is, many celebs are completely oblivious to this changing current; and therein lies the interest.  We will be in for some unique dymanics as this situation continues to build.

What is politics without celebrity these days?  In fact, the arrival of Beyonce and Jay-Z drew louder cheers at the inauguration Monday than the arrival of Vice-President Joe Biden and his wife Jill .  Other celebrities who made an appearance where Katy Perry and John Mayer, singer Ke$ha, actress Eva Longoria, and former Boston Celtics Bill Russell are just a few out of the many who had made an appearance. Recording artist James Taylor kicked off the musical performances during the public ceremeony, strumming his guitar and singing "America the Beautiful." American Idol winner Kelly Clarkson followed with a special arrangement of "My Country `Tis of Thee," and Beyonce perfomed the national anthem. Musical legend Stevie Wonder and singer/actress Jennifer Hudson were among the entertainment at Monday night's inaugural balls.  And singer Alicia Keys even modified her hit "Girl on Fire" to reflect the president.  James Taylor kicked off the musical performances, strumming his guitar and singing "America the Beautiful." Kelly Clarkson followed with a different arrangement of "My Country `Tis of Thee."  Let's see how the crowds liked the mix of politicos and notables from the music/sports/film world.....

I am troubled by the Hollywood/ Washington DC connection- though it's hardly a new thing ... it's a tool for the Pres to spread his views, through the connection-conduit to the dumb ignorant masses. I wish that the media would declare a moratorium on celebrity coverage and focus on real issues that Pres Obama will be confronting.

Well, far be it from the comment-sphere to ever hold back; and the below is certainly no exception.  What is particularly interesting to note here is how celebrity/entertainment intersects with politics in many of the comments. Writer James Wolcott has pondered the rise of a new political-entertainment class which has influenced and warped many of its citizens. Exaggeration, film, celebrity, comparisons to reality competition shows - is political life imitating/borrowing too heavily from "art"?  Only time will tell.  In the meantime, as people critique the President, could the time be just as well-served critiquing our information sources and how they may subsconsciously and consiously affect us?  Hmmm......

He is too lenient, he is apologizing too much, he's bowing too low, he should have done what Jimmy Carter did in 1979, when he ordered a rescue mission to save 53 American hostages in Tehran. These are some of the criticisms made about President Barack Obama regarding his overall foreign policy in light of the U.S. Ambassador to Libya Chistopher Stevens and three staffers being killed. According to analysts, now is the time when the Republicans perhaps have an opportunity to over-ride Obama's chances of getting re-elected. Obama is also criticized for preferring to be loved in the Middle East rather than being strong. But what do American citizens think?

What Others Are Saying...

... The U.S. has entered dangerous water with Obama, and the majority seem to think this election is casting a vote for the winner of the American Idol. ... Unfortunately, the world around us is deadly serious; the majority of Americans are too caught up in celebrity and pleasure to understand what Obama stands for ... Ideas Have Consequences... Raise your hand if you're bored yet with the supposedly one of the greatest companies ever that seems to have the worst issues with business.  In the old days, perhaps there might have been a bit more compassion; but in an era where transparency rules, antics are tolerated with far less patience.  In a larger sense, however, we seem to be witnessing the fall-out that takes place when companies disregard certain standards of integrity in business and for those who participate in building their business. Analyst Brian Solis touches on such a concept a bit in his work. New era, but some either haven't gotten the memo or have overlooked it.  Let's see how this one turns out in the end.

Facebook share prices was down 54 percent to $17.55 from its IPO this week until the company's CEO Mark Zuckerberg announced that he was not selling his stocks for at least another year. Zuckerberg owns 444 million shares plus an option for another 60 million. After Zuckerberg's announcement, the price went up almost 2 percent after the trading day was over. Some of the initial investors in Facebook, including Facebook co-founder Dustin Moskovitz, have already sold their shares. Many more followed after the stock continued to plunge. The next time Facebook employees will be able to sell their shares is October 29 when, according to reports, 234 million shares will be set free. The saga continues.

Such comments below seem to be indicative of the increasing rise of the SmartPower class - questioning authority, radically re-evaluating values, more socially aware.  But are today's corporations truly listening?  Further with such great wealth divide in this country and around the world, is now the time to be announcing such great wealth that so few can access at the moment?  While that may be the case, betcha the demand for iPhone 5 will still be very high.  Let's watch and see.

Apple has re-confirmed its position as the world's most valuable company. It has the highest value which has now reached $624 billion. The previous record was a little over $620 billion. It was set by Microsoft Corp. in 1999 during the Internet boom. Apple's stock had been dipping in the last four months but regained value due to its IPhone 5, which is to be released soon.
