Facebook Contains 83 Million Fake Accounts

Fri, 08/03/2012 - 11:31am

Looks like the word is in from the comment-sphere.  The problem seems to be arising from Facebook trying to be all things to all people and overly wrapped up in and through everyone else's business.  Why company's have allowed this to happen, is anyone's guess; but you can bet your bottom dollar that this will further lead to the rising trend of better quality and limited numbers over the kitchen sink approach.   As the focus turns more and more toward the individual and his/her own power in this new era, the old way of measuring metrics and the value of certain ones is fast falling away.  (However so true on first dude's comment about FB seemingly never deleting your old account.  Just what is up with that?!?)

The social media giant, Facebook has just announced that 83 million, or 8.7 percent, of its 995 million active users are fake. This massive number exceeds many countries populations’, such as that of Egypt. In addition, Facebook has also stated that 4.8 percent of accounts are duplicates, 2.4 percent are user-misclassified accounts, and 1.5 percent are undesirable accounts, or spam accounts. Despite these numbers, Facebook continues to lead the way in social media, yet what are people thinking about this latest development?

What Others Are Saying...

If they would delete accounts when told to do so, they would not have this issue. I'm still getting notifications from an account I supposedly deleted 2 years ago...

They bought this problem when they decided to push being the ubiquitous go-to login for everything. Unintended consequences, Zuck…

For some of these accounts, I'd put the blame on Farmville and similar games that force you to have a certain number of friends playing in order to progress in the game…I know that's why my pets and gold fish have accounts.
